annoying thing on ubuntu

Asked by fabytes

Hi, I just would like to report a very annoying problem on ubuntu. It's the fact that some packages you install don't create an icon on the menu. Sometimes it tries, it create an .desktop entry somewhere else that gnome doesn't. Maybe because it was configure for another release or to Debian and not ubuntu. but what I mean is that installing packages still a great hindrance for newbies. They are used to windows that you download a binary, double click it, click next->next->next, and you have shortcuts everywhere so you can forget where you've installed it. 'Cause you know that you have shortcuts on your desktop.

Thanks.

Thank you for taking time to report the problem you're having. In order to have things fixed I encourage you to submit a bug for each package that you see creating a .desktop file in the wrong location or not creating it at all. Make sure the summary looks like:

somepackage does not create a menu entry
or
somepackage has misplaced .desktop

Also, please associate the bug report to the right package, this will make the people that package these software for ubuntu aware of the problem.

Cheers,

nicolasvw

I didn't refer to a specific package, It's just something that happens often most of the time it's not ubuntu official repositories. You see, it I install a new program on windows and for instance it doesn't create an icon. A go to Start->programs->blablabla right click choose new entry, then browse my file to find the executable and ok. It's on my menu. Does gnome have a too like this? Ah, no I remember, it happens often when I use the 'alien' tool to convert .rmp to deb.
