problem upgrading from 14.04 to 16.04.1

Asked by Patrick Moy

I did the automatic upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04.1. Everything seem to work as expected until computer reboots. It reboots into a blank screen and stays that way. However, when I go into Advanced Option during boot and select "Ubuntu, with Linux 4.4.0-31-generic (upstart)," system boots into the expected user interface, and things seem to work fine. How do I go about fixing this?

If you try setting upstart as default (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SystemdForUpstartUsers#Permanent_switch_back_to_upstart ), does the system boot well?

Yes it does. Default is currently set to upstart, and system boots without problems.

I didn't use the procedure outlined in your hyperlink to make upstart as the default. All I did was to use an application called Grub Customizer to move upstart to the first position, so that it's used as the default. Is this adequate for now?

Is there anyway to fix Systemd in my installation since that's supposed to be the long term solution?

The link you provided does send me to report of a similar problem. But no answer was provided. It contains a link that sends me back to this posting; not very useful! Do you have a recommendation on how to fix Systemd?
