streaming video and music issues

Asked by danchicago

I recently updated my ubuntu system. After I did this I went to play some music and while the player opens I have no sound. Then when I went to play a video, the video opens but it runs in slow motion and no sound. Now the websites like CNN, and others the video and sound work fine. I have looked to see that GStreamer and things are installed. I am stumped. Any ideas?

What type of files are they? What are you trying to open them with? Try installing 'ubuntu restricted extras'. You can do it through 'Applications'->'Add/Remove Applications'.

Have a look at alsamixer (just enter alsamixer into a terminal)
A semi-GUI window will pop up.. make sure all of the bars are maxed out or to your liking.

Thanks for your solutions. I have tried both and they did not seem to do the trick. Now I get a message that reads: Failed to connect to stream: Invalid argument. Any ideas? The videos I have our WMV and the music I want to listen to is just stuff I have downloaded from my CDs.

It all worked before the upgrade without any problems.

Hey, thanks again. I did looked at the sight mentioned but I do not believe it really addresses the issue. I will look at it again. I am still getting this FAILED TO CONNECT: Invalid argument message. Before this what I was getting was a video in slow motion and no sound. My music has not been able to play. I have looked at the sites that I get my video from and they do not report any problems so I am sure it has something to do with some type of new setting. Like I said earlier. The videos are .wmv videos so I have no idea if that makes a difference or not.
