ATI driver leads to blank screen

Asked by harrumph

This is the third time I've had to ask a question, all related back to the same problem. I finally got ubuntu to boot for me, and then updated to the new 8.4. I was having xserver issues. I finally get it up and running, and when I try to install the ATI driver, it restarts, loads fine and then goes to a black screen. No mouse, no command prompt. Nothing. There's a flash of a few lines as it seems to kick in the driver and then nothing. Is there another driver I can use with my ATI Radeon x1600 pro? I'm stuck using the default driver right now.

Nevermind.. did a quick google, downloaded EnvyNG and it's installing my driver right now. Hopefully it works. If anyone else has this problem using ubuntu 8.4, use your terminal console and type this:

sudo apt-get install envyng-gtk

Then open Envy through applications and system files, pick either ATI or NVidia and it'll automatically install the correct driver. It's not guaranteed at all, so be careful using it.

Nevermind.. I got the same blank screen doing that. It says my card is supported, and it works perfectly fine on my windows section. What could be wrong?

This might be related with the following bug report:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-driver-ati/+bug/220345 (kernel 2.6.24-16-generic + radeon driver = system freezes)

They are working on it and have reported the bug upstream.

Can you help with this problem?
