Have you installed the printer in Ubuntu?

Go to the menu
   System -> Administration -> Printing
On the left under "Local Printers" your printer should appear.
Otherwise install it using the "New Printer" button. If you have the printer turned on and connected to your computer (over a serial link LPT/USB or even ethernet) and you are lucky, it will be detected.

have made sure cupsys the printing service is running?

Go to the menu
   System -> Administration -> Services

scroll down to "Printer Service (cupsys)" is enabled, if not place a tick in the check box

if it is not listed try installing it:

press ALT-F2 > enter "gnome-terminal" into the text box press enter
type "sudo apt-get install cupsys" press enter, then press CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE to restart xserver
