If I change to only linux Ubuntu 8.04

Asked by ecrivain5

I want to change completely to only Linux Ubuntu 8.04 which I am presently running alongside windows xp pro.
My questions are
1. If I use "complete disk" on install to get rid of windows will Ubuntu still pick up my hardware without me having to install manually the drivers. (which I only have for windows).
2. Alternatively, can I remove windows from it's separate partition on the same hard drive. (I have 2 partitions on a 200GB hard drive. 73GB with windows and the remainder with Linux.
3. OR is there another easier way.
My thanks in advance for your help.
Brian

1. Ubuntu picks up quite a lot of hardware, though it's still not complete. Many manufacturers don't follow standards well and end up with hardware with obscure standards.
In other words: Often yes, but possibly not. Suggest you test it out to see if every last part of your hardware works. Some things may not be instantly up and working and require forcing the drivers to install.

Alternative answer to #1:
Uninstalling windows will not effect Ubuntu's pre-existing support for your hardware. i.e. Ubuntu does not rely on the Windows drivers to run the hardware, it's a separate operating system. (Unless it's hardware-remembered settings or permanent changes which will affect the hardware itself. If you brick your iPod in windows, it's still bricked in Ubuntu)

2. If you install Ubuntu into a separate partition and later decide you don't want/need Windows or it's files, you can delete it's partition with the Partition Manager (gparted), which can be used to recreate the partition as a linux partition. Or you could delete all files off the windows partition and then just use it as the partition it is already, though Linux plays better with it's more native formats like ext3 than it does with NTFS, which Microsoft doesn't document for free.

Thanks Kevin...I will give the installed Ubuntu a week to make sure I don't get a blank screen at startup again.
if all is fine. Then Ubuntu it is from then on. I shall
The only hardwares not detected are apple Ipod and web cam Logitech 5000 pro and I can ask around the forums for those answers
as I believe these are both supported with a bit of work.
I shall use "delete windows partitoin" to remove it. Nice and simple:-)
Again my thanks.
