update-manager to hoary failed

Asked by breathwork

Using the gui update manager, did a dist-upgrade that failed, now when I run it the gui reports:

Could not calculate the upgrade

A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

 This can be caused by:
 * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport.

When I run apt-get from the command line I get:

 sudo apt-get build-dep
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Must specify at least one package to check builddeps for
mortimer@lamo:~$ sudo apt-get -f upgrade

The following packages have been kept back:
  gnash gnash-common gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
  hwdb-client-common liba52-0.7.4 libboost-date-time1.34.1
  libboost-thread1.34.1 libdvdread3 libebml0 libgtkhtml3.8-15 libntfs-gnomevfs
  libsvg1 libvcdinfo0 libvlc0 libwxbase2.6-0 libwxgtk2.6-0 mcpp
mozilla-plugin-gnash python-xml serpentine sleuthkit startupmanager testdisk
  vlc vlc-nox wine xserver-xorg-input-elographics
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 28 not upgraded.

Can anybody help?

So you're trying to upgrade from Warty Warthog (4.10) to Hoary Hedgehog (5.04)?
Did you mean to say Hardy Heron (8.04)?

Can you provide clarification on what you wish to accomplish?

I have just resolved the problem. I downloaded 8.04 DVD and re-installed over the top of the old system. Its now working fine.

It was an attempt to upgrade from 7 -> 8 using the update manager, and something went seriously voodoo.

Thanks anyway
