python-serial package not listed

Asked by David

Hello,

I recently installed Kubuntu 6.10 on a new desktop, but I do not see 'python-serial' listed as a package that I can install from the Adept GUI package manager. I used the same disk to install Kubuntu on a laptop, and on that system the package is listed, and I can install it. I also noted that the installation dvd shows up as a repository resource on the laptop, but not on the desktop, although this may be unrelated. Both systems were updated on-line.

Although perhaps a bit extreme, I have repeated the complete Kubuntu install process twice on each system now, with the same findings; I can't seem to get the python-serial package to come up, such that I can install it and have access to the python serial module. I am not a (k)ubuntu nor Linux expert, but I will dig into config files if I have to.

I would appciate learning how to get access to the python serial module intstall package, and secondarily, why such a package would show up on one system and not on another system (which might help me in the future).

Hi there,

python-serial is a package on "universe" repository, as you can see here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/python/python-serial

Probably you don't have universe repository in /etc/apt/sources.list

A simply way to generate source.list is using this web application:

http://www.ubuntu-nl.org/source-o-matic/

and a full guide is here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Kubuntu

Let me know if you solved this problem.

Cheers

Yes. Thanks. That got it. I copied the text the link application
generated, into the sources.list file, and now the serial package shows up
and installs and works!

And the doc page is something I stumbled over before, and now I see the
connection, so that's good too. (No that I understand much of the
convolution of it all.)

Thanks again...on to posting my next difficulty...

David
