why does system monitor show 2 cpus?

Asked by human onion

I am very new and ignorant about Ubuntu, however, I thought it quite strange to show two cpus in System Monitor. It doesnt duplicate the first one in performance---in other words, they seem to be doing different things at different times. There is only one processor. I got afraid there was another person logged on somehow, which would be something unwelcome. Any help is appreciated. What can I do to fix this?

Sorry, didnt say, but its not dual core, just pentium 4....any ideas?

Do you have HyperThreading on the Pentium 4?

Pentium 4 with HyperThreading technology is seen by the OS as 2 processors, although they share the same core. This is not a symptom of someone else being logged in your computer, so don't worry. See this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper-threading

You can see who's logged in your machine at the Application Switcher (probably has your name, near the system clock), or opening the Terminal (Applications/Accesories/Terminal) and typing "who". If you're feeling insecure for some obscure reason (if you have a strong password and keep your system updated, that's a good way for security), you can see the log of authentications in the auth.log file (you can see it goin gto System/
Administration/System Log).

Thanks for all the answers ....I did discover this thread about hyperthreading(something new to me) after posting the question, but from what I read I would need to turn it on myself, which I dont think I did. I noticed the two processors on the system after trying to install Firestarter, although I have np idea if they are related. Anyway, I just thought it odd and it made me curious and a little concerned. I just installed Ubuntu a few days ago. How would hyperthreading have gotten turned on, or is it already turned on?

Although I truly dont know much about this, I had a suspicion something or someone had done that. Whatever the reason, I now feel uncomfortable using this operating system(after 2 days this problem) and will try another. Thanks for all the input.
