How do I retrieve a WEP code stored on my PC on 8.04 LTS

Asked by s1LeNtDaY

When I had Gutsy, I could find my WEP code in the Key Ring Manager. When I Upgraded to Heron it removed the Keyring manager as "obsolete software". I know it is stored on my PC somewhere because the connection still works. I need it for other devices.

System / Preferences / Seahorse Preferences. The first tab lists keyrings.

Have you tried 192.168.1.1 in your browser?
For most routers, this pulls up the configuration too, where you can retrieve the WEP code.
Then you'll have at least half of what you need to resolve your issue. Just need to find where to put it.

When I go to 192.168.1.1 in my browser, it just keeps loading, and loading, and loading. Is it stored in the "login" keyring and if so how do I open it and see it?

Well, let me ask you this, is there a way to save my network settings, reinstall Ubuntu and then load them back. One of the reasons I need it is my sound isn't working right and I am going to try to reinstall Ubuntu.

Hello

You need the address of your default gateway/wireless router (AP), which may be in the /etc/network/interfaces file or found with command: sudo ifconfig -a, put that address in the URL of your browser and the Gateway/wireless router configuration page should show up where you can view current configurations or change them.

Or if it doesnt work,

You need to install aircrack-ng.

As to the network configurations:

Once you have connected to a network, even unintentionally, it's configuration details will have been stored in the GConf registry. Since you say your wireless connection works,

Navigate to system -> networking -> wireless -> networks. There you will find separate directories for each network under it's network name (essid).

Sorry, I meant to say:

Open gconf-editor, and navigate to system -> networking -> wireless -> networks.

I found it! It was under applications/accessories/Password and Encryption keys. I found it when I was going to quit looking for a while and I was going to play a game and I clicked the wrong tab. Thanks all of you for all your help
