xorg using 100% CPU

Asked by Luke

AFter upgrading to Hardy Heron my computer got so slow it was barely usable. Looking at top, the process xorg was using all the CPU it could forcing my system to run at 100% all the time. After about 5 minutes xorg will crash and restart putting me back at the login screen. My video card is an ATI x600 and I using whatever driver is default.

This might be related with the following bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/195051

Some people are experiencing problems with several ATI video cards (including x600) with compiz is enabled, when using xserver-xorg-video-ati driver.

How do I disable compiz and get my system back running normally?

Go to System/Preferences/Appearance. In the last tab (Visual Effects), choose none.
