Help with LexMark X1240 printer in Wine

Asked by Jach

Hi, I'm still pretty new to Ubuntu but the only thing I haven't been able to get working properly is my LexMark X1240 printer (given as a gift for Christmas). I've researched a little and found it doesn't have a Linux Driver, but what about using the Installation CD under Wine? So I tried that, and it seemed to run right until it tried to connect with the printer, in which case it said it wasn't connected properly (which it was). It said to click Next to retry, and ten clicks later still nothing.

Do I need to configure Wine somehow to recognize my USB devices? I don't imagine so, as my wireless mouse works fine.

Wont work. Wine doesn't support device drivers, only normal applications (and not ones that need to directly access the hardware either). The only way of using your printer is either harassing Lexmark until they make a Linux driver or if you have a legal copy of Windows is to install Windows in VMWare and you can then print from there (VMWare basically lets you emulate a computer on your desktop so you plug in the printer and then it'll be seen inside VMWare and it would be just like using Windows) but that's not that useful as it requires you to do a full install of Windows inside VMWare taking up more space, time, etc.

BUT, with that being said you may be able to use another driver instead. I looked up your printer on LinuxPrinting.org and it wasn't on there, but the x1270 was (I imagine they must be quite similar) and it said to add the printer telling it to use the z600 driver and it will work perfectly, so there is still hope.

Yes! I used the z600 driver and now have my printer printing. (I don't think the z600 is a scanner, but oh well, at least it prints.) I'll just have to switch over to Windows whenever I want to scan something, which hopefully shoulnd't be too much of a big deal.

After I got a z600 .sh file I wasn't sure what to do with it, as the readme that came with it wasn't very clear. However after some more searching I found this page that gave instructions for installing, and viola. http://finebushpeople.net/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=65
