Driver-Installation to speed up computer.

Asked by Dalai

How can I check what version of DirectX I am running. How can I check if my ATI-Radeon-Drivers work fine? Everything seems a bit too slow for my taste. Windows-XP ran absolutly fluent. Furthermore: What about updating Motherboard-Drivers? (Gigabyte nForce2 7NF-RZ.
Thank you.

Ubuntu does not use directX, directX is a windows thing. for graphics acceleration on ubuntu you use something called OpenGL.

To check the speed of your drivers/graphics card i would suggest installing some sort of game such as OpenArena which can be found in the repositories, if the game performs nicely i would think everything is working fine.

you can also try running "glxgears" from a terminal, if it prints out a high framerate (at least a couple of hundred frames a second) and runs smoothly then your system setup is fine.

If not make sure you have whatever drives the restricted drivers manager suggests you install

you can also disable things such as desktop effects to speed things up
