D-Link DWL-510 not being detected correctly

Asked by Benjamin Hodgetts

This device seems to be "sort of" detected and set up as it shows up as "wlan0" in 'ifconfig' but when using anything such as KNetworkManager it shows up as "RaLink Unknown (0x0302) (wlan0)" and won't find any networks when scanning. Using the KWifiManager program just seems to go mad, it cycles through what seems like every possible state which doesn't help. The device is based on the RT61 chipset.

Some more possibly useful info:

This is really a special problem.

Here is my solution :

1 - Make sure you do have Universe and Multiverse enabled.
2 - Download this
http://tenshu.nuxit.net/wp-content/uploads/2006/06/rt61.tar.gz
and extract it to your home directory.
3 - Open a terminal and run "sudo sh testscript"
4 - At the end a window will open, and you will need to provide some default info : SSID, Encryption Type and Key
5 - Reboot and configure your network normally : by editing /etc/network/interfaces or System --> Administration --> Network.

Let the magic happen ! (Well I hope)

Oh, just saying...

What I just wrote before is for dapper.

If you are using edgy, then :
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/RalinkRT61?action=show&redirect=Rt61WirelessCardsHowTo

Good Luck :D

Oh, just thought I'd update this. With Feisty it's not quite so insane. It seems to detect it properly now and scans (actually floods dmesg over time which can be annoying) but it wont ever see any access points. I'll try your Edgy driver method a bit later (took the card out as it seems to have been causing hardlocks). I tried to get this card working with Gentoo previously and it would see networks but wpa_supplicant would never connect to the WPA-AES network.

As long as you see wlan0 or wmaster0 instead of ra0, it won't work.

The Ralink driver method is the only known way of getting out of this. I had to correct this problem myself two weeks ago.

Can you help with this problem?
