Server Edition question

Asked by quikone

I have just started experimenting and testing Ubuntu. I had previously tried Fedora and was not impressed. Anyway, I have two questions. I will be using a Dell server with Ubuntu 8.04. My first question is; can I install the server edition, but add a GUI to it, and if so which one and how? Question two I think is a bit more complex; I am running a Network server On MS Server 2003 and a Terminal Server on MS 2003, the question is do I need special software or hardware to have the Ubuntu box part of that server farm, and if so what and how?

Thanks,

Ron

To add Gnome Desktop Manager to your Ubuntu server please type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps

If you prefer the KDE Desktop environment instead of Gnome, you can install the kubuntu-desktop package instead of

What do you consider being part of the server farm? You can use samba in the right configuration to integrate the linux server as a file and print server using the Active Directory authentication. The samba website has several good examples for configurations (http://http://us3.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/)

It is also possible to use connect pam to the AD via LDAP in order to allow logins into the ubuntu server.

I hope this helps.
