"/" is the root filesystem and its generally advisable *not* to write any information there. really you should be copying your picture files and things to your home directory (/home/<yourusernamegoeshere>/) there you have read/write permitions to do this

Thanks Gord.

I just installed Gutsy and I don't know just how to get started building a home directory.
where do I create this home directory from the command line or from the GUI?

OK how do I make this folder the default so that when I insert the thumb drive it will go to this folder first?

I guess I was rreally premature in asking this question. I found "home folder" and was able to drag and drop all my files into other folders that I created . Thanks for putting up with me
Harry
Keep up the good work
