Hardy upgrade alternate CD
I am trying to upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy using the alternate disk.
I'm using Ubuntu, not Kubuntu or any any of those variations.

Upgrading using the alternate CD/DVD
Use this method if the system being upgraded is not connected to the Internet.
1. Download and burn the alternate installation CD.
2. Insert it into your CD-ROM drive.
3. A dialog will be displayed offering you the opportunity to upgrade using that CD.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
If the upgrade dialog is not displayed for any reason, you may also run the following command using Alt+F2:
gksu "sh /cdrom/
[end quote]
1. Did this. I downloaded both "Standard" and "64 bit".
2. Did this. I tried both of them.
3. There was no dialog for either.
4. No dialog, no instructions.
I did the Alt+F2 and
gksu "sh /cdrom/
Nothing happened in either case.
I tried the Update Manager and clicked on "Upgrade" figuring that it would use the CD as a source of files. Tried both CDs. Both CDs ran into the same problem.
This is the problem, same for both "Standard" and "64 bit":
[begin quote]
Could not calculate the upgrade
A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/
[end quote]
I didn't do anything to do with "pre-release".
I don't know anything about "unofficial software packages".
I don't want to do an install. I want to do an upgrade.
How can I upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy?
(With Mandrake it was easy. Why can't an Ubuntu upgrade be just as easy as Mandrake was?)

I tried the update manager without a CD and I got the same error message.

I succeeded in upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy. I removed the nvidia
driver and then the upgrade worked. I was disappointed that the
upgrade process did not use the CD. After the upgrade the screen
resolution was wrong. I had a hard time fixing the screen resolution.
screen resolution fix:
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Under 'Section "Monitor"'
I put a # in front of the 'modeline "800x' lines
Then I rebooted and got a reasonable screen resolution.
Canonical needs to fix the Hardy upgrade process.
