can I revert to the older version of firefox

Asked by Ian Brownlie

I have recently upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04, the newer Ubuntu is fabulous with one exception, Firefox. The new version does not have imacros, tab mix plus and is one of the slowest browsers I've ever used. Is it possible to go back to the previous version where all the add ons were compatible and worked at light speed compared to firefox-3. Failing that, is there another browser that works well in Ubuntu.

Yes, you can revert to Firefox 2, just remove Firefox 3 with:-
sudo apt-get remove firefox-3.0
and then install Firefox 2:-
sudo apt-get install firefox-2

The previous version of firefox is still available as firefox-2. You can install firefox-2 from Synaptic Package Manager or from command line with the command:
$ sudo apt-get install firefox-2.

Can you post the full output of running that command instead of just the end part.

Ian please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install firefox-2

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps

Owen Reiney says installed Ubuntu 8.10 with Windows XP in a dual boot
confg. with Firefox 3.01 - everything works fine. Then, when I installed the
new version of Ubuntu 9.10 all of my programs & files in Windows XP
and Firefox 3.0 refused to work. Can some nice person tell me how to
uninstall Ubuntu 9.10 so can get back to Ubuntu 8.10. Thank you.
