This laptop seems to be erratic under the "upgrade". Acer have made some odd installation choices, and DSE staff have inadvertently modified some machines in the process of upgrading the memory.

The above errors involve ndiswrapper - I have good results with the madwifi-ng drivers. However - a full install is strongly recommended over an upgrade just to eliminate the original pre-install issues.

For a full list see:
www.hbclinux.net.nz/ubuntu-804.html
... the same page links to a discussion of the original 7.10 pre-install as supplied in NZ by DSE.

From that site - wireless and update manager are working on the test machine. File sharing (do you mean "samba" is not tested.)

A fresh install is the way to go.

The link above has error. Use link below for recommended upgrade

http://www.hbclinux.net.nz/acer4315-804.html

I had to reuse the following from the instructions after a later update which caused the wireless networking to stop functioning.

cd madwifi-ng-r2756+ar5007
sudo make install
sudo modprobe ath_pci
sudo modprobe wlan_scan_sta

I got it working in the end and thanks for the help.

I was playing around with a few different things i found on other forums with no outcome.
I ended up booting with 2.6.22-14 then using my hardy install cd that i used to install my desktop pc navigated to
/media/cdrom0/pool/main/n/ndiswrapper and reinstalled ndiswrapper-common_1.50-1ubuntu1_all.deb
and ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.50-1ubuntu1_i386.deb and restarted Ubuntu it booted fine in 2.6.24-16 I had to remove the
profile i had before for my wifi and redo it but shes running like a dream now all I got left to do is it take it to my friends place and re-setup
his wifi conection.

P.S I'm not sure whether thats what done the trick or whether it was dumb luck with what id tried prior and above just
tiping the scale in my favor. Posted just incase this imformation helps someone.

Kazza - another approach to the ndiswrapper issue is to remove ubuntu-supplied version and install from source.

However - for the Acer/DSE edition it is an extremely good idea to do a fresh install. The alternative is to reverse engineer what Acer (Australia) have done to it.

Good news is that Acer NZ are consulting NZ GNU/Linux community (NZOSS/NZLUG) concerning future releases. The next set should be working properly.
