Shutdown durring update killed ubuntu / update killed mouse

Asked by Rich Porter

1) Ubuntu hardy (development branch) 8.04

2) Newest update as of 04/09/08

3,4) I forgot that I was running the update in the background and shut down my computer via the button on the task bar. The computer shut down (There should be a warning there that you might break your computer if you don't finish the update). I came back a few hours later, it booted into a black screen with my mouse cursor instead of a log on screen.

I restarted to recovery / root console, attempted dpkg --configure -a, and it failed because one of the services wasn't running (I should've written it down, either way though, it wouldn't fix it).

I restarted and chose the normal boot, then when it gave me the black screen I switched to a terminal and it allowed me to dpkg --configure -a, fixing the update. However, when I got back to gnome login, my mouse was no longer working (Logitech mx-something wireless laser).

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .

May be this can help you...
Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get update --fix-missing
sudo apr-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

then reboot by typing:

sudo reboot

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps
