The kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU

Asked by SDECHA

Under VmWare Workstation (Version 5 or 6) it is not possible to start the lts 8.04 Server .
The complete Message is: The kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU
0:6
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU

This messages comes on different Laptops and Desktops with VmWare or VirtualBox.
What is the reason for this?

We had to restart the System in recocery mode and installed the linux-generic kernel. Now it's working.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at [WWW] https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. You most likely have the wrong server image.

Try using the i386 image or the amd64.

I linked your question against bug #151942, which seems related. I'm also going to reopen your original bug report, if you please could check if you're able to boot a hardy desktop installation cd.

I cam across this error when trying to run Ubuntu 8.0.4.4 server on VirtualBox (version 3.1.2). The solution was to enable PAE/NX (Settings -> System -> Processor -> Extended features checkbox).

Hope this helps.
