update manager not working

Asked by EAZYEH

I AM USING 7.10 AND SUDDENLY UPDATE MANAGER, SYNAPTICS OR ADD/REMOVE SOFTWARE STOPPED WORKING. I DONT KNOW WHEN IT STOPPED BUT I NOTICED IT WHEN I TRIED TO UPGRADE TO 8.04. I HAVE TRIED TO UNINSTALL AND REINSTALL UPDATE MANAGER BUT ONLY GET ERRORS: HERE IS THE LAST LINES OF THE ERROR:
A package failed to install. Trying to recover:
dpkg: error processing update-manager-core (--configure):
Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
 reinstall it before attempting configuration.
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of update-manager:
 update-manager depends on update-manager-core (= 1:0.81); however:
Package update-manager-core is not configured yet.
dpkg: error processing update-manager (--configure):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Errors were encountered while processing:
 update-manager-core
 update-manager

i WANTED TO UPGRADE TO 8.04 BUT IT SEEMS KIND OF SCARY NOW WITH ALL THE PROBLEMS I HAVE BEEN READING BUT I DO WANT TO GET UPDATES..CAN ANYONE HELP?

Hello
please download via the torrents

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2008-April/000111.html http://releases.ubuntu.com/hardy/ubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent
Here is the MD5 sums mirror
http://goukihq.org/MD5

Here is an alternative link
http://hobbsee.com/tmp/ for the .torrent files (releases.ubuntu.com is slow)

and if you are downloading normally, use local servers in Apt/Synaptic sources.

Regards

Bhavani Shankar.

I have been working on this exact problem for about a week with another user and I've been unable to find a solution. Doing sudo apt-get update would not work for her. It appears to be a corrupted kernel module. One possible solution I have seen is on the forums

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=406671

The solution I gave the other user was simply to upgrade to Heron.

Hello EAZYEH or anyone else,

I am new to Ubuntu, and I am having some problem with Update Manager.
When I click it to check for updates, it gives the following message:

"Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

I do not know what to do. Is it okay if you may assist me?

Sincerely,
-TJ
