I just installed version 4 myself.

http://earth.google.com/
Click "download" in the top right.
Make sure the radio button says "Linux" and click the download button.
Once downloaded (usually this will end up with a file on your desktop) double click GoogleEarthLinux.bin and choose "run" when prompted. It will install by default to a directory called ~/google-earth and place an icon on your Applications --> Internet menu.

Hi Alan,

I've just tried how you recommended but ubuntu doesn't know which
application it should use.
Is it terminal?
I will try to associate them.
Or is there a terminal prompt which starts installation?

http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repo/pool/edgy/non-free/i386/googleearth_4.0.2414-1medibuntu3_i386.deb

Just double-click the deb and it should install easily.

BTW if you downloaded the official bin package that Alan linked to and you rather use that; right click it and make it executable by clicking the check box in the permissions section of the properties dialog, then open a terminal, navigate to the directory in which the file resides and run the file with:

./GoogleEarthLinux.bin

[or whatever you named the file when saving]

Unfortunately it still doesn't work. I succeeded to install but it
stucks at 'initializing'. I don"t know whether it counts but it is
laptop computer. And i even can't change the resolution. There are no
alternatives besides 1024X768

If you do not have hardware accelerated graphics I don't think you will be very satisfied using Google Earth as it's pretty graphics intensive...

Is the graphics card of your laptop configured correctly (does glxgears run smoothly)?

You may need to use proprietary drivers in order to get the desired results.

Glxgears works correctly. An so long I haven't had any problem with 3d
graphics, (there are some simulators under ubuntu) and Google Earth
worked correctly under windows

Oops, sorry for that double post, my mistake. :)

Anyhow, you don't have a 64-bit pc so that doesn't look like the problem. To be honest I can't workout what's happening with googleearth, but I can probably help with your resolution problem.

They go into changing refresh rates aswell, but I don't think you need to do hat.

Sorry about not being able to help with the google earth thing, but somebody else might be able to.

Hi,

I have 64bit PC and can't run it. It sticks at the initializing screen.

I am able to install and run GoogleEarth on:
* Ubuntu feisty 64bit
* Ubuntu gutsy 64bit
* Kubuntu feisty 64bit
* Kubuntu gutsy 64bit
* Ubuntu Studio gutsy 64bit

Simply add the medibuntu repositories, you can find the instructions here:

Run the following command to install
sudo apt-get install googleearth

Then run the program with
googleearth

Very rarely, GoogleEarth will display the splash screen and immediately exit. I think this is a bug in GoogleEarth itself because if I wait about a minute and run it again the program loads and runs fine.

Alan Pope is right. I just installed Google Earth and no difficulty whatsoever. There is just one thing Alan forgot to mention: after you download Google Earth to your desktop, right click with the mouse and choose Permissions to make it an executable file and it will open. Then choose Run. It will place it in your home directory and create a folder for it. You will see a blue and white ball on your desktop. This is your icon. To open it, double click on the blue and white icon and Google Earth should open. On installation there will be a little black window on your desktop. Just place your cursor on the last line and press enter and it will close. Hope this helps. Thanks Alan Pope.

HI! just new hir and im havin a lot of ubuntu problems since I started using it 2months ago..hope u can help me. Im installing google earth and Im done with it. I run it through Applications>Internet>Google Earth..it opens and suddenly close. I cant even do anything to it. What seems to be the problelm?
