16.04.1 install from Upgrade manager has stalled half way.

Asked by Stephen Smith

My system is an HP Pavilion dv7 series laptop, AMD A8 APU, 16Gb Ram, 750Gb HD. Running dual boot Ubuntu 14.04 64bit and Windows 10 64bit.
I was invited by Upgrade Manager to upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04.01. I began the process and received all downloads. My laptop was going through the "Installing the upgrades" process when, half way through, the process stopped at "Configuring ttf-mscorefonts-installer". There was a licensing agreement from Microsoft which wanted me to answer <OK>. I was not able to answer. I moved my mouse to click on <OK> but nothing happened. I panicked and started pressing Enter, Esc, Backspace. The Terminal screen went blank. In retrospect after reading an answer to a similar question, I SHOULD HAVE PRESSED <TAB>. But there was no instruction to do so. I had no idea. After reading that answer, out of desperation, I pressed <TAB> and a blank Terminal screen had <OK> highlighted in red. I pressed the Enter key. Nothing happened. I pressed TAB again and NO showed up in the Terminal screen. Out of desperation, I pressed the Enter key. Nothing happened. I feel like I have messed up the new installation.
Currently, my installation process has stalled at the Microsoft font licensing agreement and will not continue on. Is it possible to restart the "Installing the upgrade" process?? How can I continue past this point of the installation process? I am at the half way point.
Please help.

Try:

sudo dpkg -P ttf-mscorefonts-installer
sudo apt-get --reinstall install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

Try pressing <TAB> until <OK> is highlighted an then press the space bar.
Maybe it works this way.

Thank you for responding to my question. Unfortunately, everything went wrong. Long story short: I went back to 14.04.
The computer locked up and I had to reboot. Ubuntu 16.04.1 was only partially loaded and I was looking at a Terminal prompt waiting for instruction. I knew everything was messed up. My only recourse was to reload Ubuntu 14.04 and start over. Luckily, I had a USB Flash drive ISO image and reloaded 14.04 and the 289 updates. Then, I started the 16.04.1 upgrade. This time, the procedure went smoothly and I now had the new operating system.
First thing I noticed was that Chromium was removed from my Launcher. I went to the Software Center to load Chromium when I discovered that Chromium does not exist in the new repository. I used Firefox to test the internet function. It works, but I don't like it.
I really didn't see any speed improvement over 14.04. Then, I disconnected the Ethernet cable and tried to connect wirelessly to my router. My laptop using 16.04.1 could not connect to my router after given the password and then, the operating system locked up. That was the last straw!! I went back to Ubuntu 14.04 and am very happy. Thank God that I created a backup of my data BEFORE I started this process.
STABILITY is my most important concern. I think Ubuntu rushed out the software. It is just like Windows 10 when it first came out and HAD NO DRIVERS. Nothing would work. Thousands of complaints which were eventually worked out four months down the road.
I am disappointed in Ubuntu. I am a simple end user. When I upgraded from 12.04 to 14.04, the Upgrade Manager ruined the grub installer when you first turn on the laptop. I wound up loosing all programming and had to do a complete rebuild of Windows 7 and then dual boot to 14.04. This is the second time that the upgrade process had failed for me which created greater effort than expected. Then to discover that the "stable" version 16.04.1 is really not stable at all was a real disappointment. I consider the Ubuntu developers to be smarter than the Windows 10 people. I cannot understand why the upgrade process is so unstable. Next time, please ask an end user to test the software to see IF the software is stable. You cannot give me back all the wasted time and effort to install this software.
I will wait another year before I try to upgrade to 16.04. Maybe by then, the operating system will be stable.
