Can't login to computer

While updating the new package for Ubuntu(16.04.1 LTS), my building had a sudden blackout. Which caused everything to shut down. My computer now takes me to a screen with white text asking for my login and password. I successfully put the right info but it doesn't take me back to the normal login screen. It looks like I have to type something extra, but I have no clue what that is. Does anyone know what I should do next?

You may also want to boot to live CD and run a full fsck on the file system.

Can you log in with username and password in that text mode?
If yes, what is the output of the commands

uname -a
lsb_release -crid

?
