How do I sychronize a Treo 755p (palm device) with Ubuntu applications?

Asked by hitekwaiter

I have tried several times to synch my new palm 755p to my Ubuntu computers. I just need the address book (contacts), the memo pad, the calender application to synch up. If I can get more stuff to synch, it would be nice. but this is mainly what I need.

thanks. let me know if you need more information

What purpose do you have in mind for the sync? Which Ubuntu applications do you want to sync with?

If you want to do backup and restore of your Palm, the "pilot-link" package can help. For example, you can back up your palm by running "mkdir palm-backup ; pilot-xfer -p usb: -b palm-backup". This will put a complete copy of everything on your palm into a directory called "palm-backup".

For other purposes, it's a bit more complicated. The memo pad and calendar are supported fairly well, but the Contacts app in OS5 only had partial support last time I checked. I managed to get Evolution to send contacts to my 755p, but some things were lost in translation.

I need to sync:
My contacts from "contacts" on my palm in WHATEVER ubuntu software is compatible
My Calender synced with what ever Ubuntu application works best.

What ever else can be sycned up would be appreciated. Do you need any more info?

You should probably start with Evolution. Here's what worked for me... First, install some things. Maybe these are already installed, but it doesn't hurt to check:

  % sudo apt-get install evolution evolution-plugins opensync-plugin-evolution opensync-plugin-palm gnome-pilot-conduits gnome-pilot

Then, run evolution. Once it starts, click Edit -> Synchronization options, and basically follow the onscreen instructions. When it asks for a device, use "usb:" instead of "/dev/pilot". When you get a bit farther, select the Conduits tab, and enable a few conduits: EAddress, ECalendar, EMemos, ETodo. You probably want to set the action to Synchronize, and the one-time action to Copy From PDA.

Then, once all the settings are saved, just hit the hotsync button on your palm connector, and Evolution should start grabbing data.

As far as I know, the calendar, memos, and the todo list all work fairly smoothly. Contacts work, but some of the new OS5 features like pictures and birthday fields may not be implemented yet.

Can you help with this problem?
