What happened to dot install in ubuntu?

Asked by A.K.Karthikeyan

Some time I ago, I read of a a file called dot install, similar to dot exe in windows. If you want to install some thing in ubuntu say VLC media player, you need to download the dot install file. When you double click it the player will be installed.

The good thing about this is you can install without Synaptic package manager, so that I can download the dot install file and can give it to my friend who has no internet connection.

I just want to know what happened to it?

Hello

Karthikeyan, .install files have to be written manually for programs/modules to install them as you said

http://drupal.org/node/51220

Secondly,

Go to this site

http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/vlc

Dowload the package and all the recommended and suggested packages and put them onto a USB drive and pass it on to your friend..

Hope it helps

Bhavani Shankar.
