Failed Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04 Failure

Asked by NSG

While updating my Everex Cloudbook from Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04 using the upgrade manager (after applying all 7.10 updates) I kept getting messages like Network Manager cannot find resources. After I clicked ok, the update would continue. The update said it was a successful completion, but at the required system reboot the system started running Ubuntu 7.10, memtest86+. It would not respond to the Esc key or anything else. All I could do was turn the hardware off.

In looking at the grub boot menu I found the only thing listed was Ubuntu 7.10, memtest86+ and nothing else. I had no other choices either old or new systems.

I am stuck with a complete show stopper. I am brand new to the Linux world, and I haven't a clue as to where to start to put things back together on my Cloudbook.

I did successfully install Ubuntu 8.04 under Windows on my laptop so I thought the Cloudbook would be a no brainer.

I would appreciate any assistance anyone may give me. Thanks, NSG

After hooking up a separate monitor to my Everex Cloudbook ( a much larger screen), I reinstalled Ubuntu 8.04. The installation was successful. The original installation was also probably successful, but due to the very small screen on the Cloudbook (7" 800 x 480 (16:10) wide screen LCD display) there was no way it would display properly. In fact, the screen looked like it was "burned out."

Now the only problem I have is to get the display screen resolution problem solved. It wasn't good under 7.10, but at least it was usable with a few exceptions where the bottom of a screen display might not be accessible even though there were usually options which needed to be chosen.

At least I have a "workable" problem to solve, so I would consider the original problem I had solved.
