Wireless network setup in ubuntu

Asked by Vijay

Am trying to setup wireless network in ubuntu. I am able to scan the nearby network on my ubuntu m/c. I just try to connect to it. I do I test that the two machines are communicating and start doing something productive from one or the other machine with the network up. Please give me your advice.

Thanks,

Are you trying to set up a network using a wireless router or an ad-hoc network between two wireless machines...

If you could provide some more detail about the type of hardware (wireless) and security you are using (WEP, WPA...) it would be very helpful.

I am settng an adhoc network, using WEP security. I am able to scan the
neighbouring network and get the network in the list. I want to know how I
can start using resources on that computer and a basic way of testing is
things are fine with the network.

Using network manager you can setup an ad-hoc network. Simply install network-manager and network-manager-gnome (or network-manager-kde) and then restart. You should get a new network manager icon on the panel. You can click it and choose "create new wireless network". Set the channel and other details and it will setup an ad-hoc connection. Do that on both machines and they should be able to talk to eachother.
