ubuntu-studio 8.04 amd64 Distribution Upgrade Hangs
ubuntu
release 7.10 (gutsy)
kernel linux 2.6.22-14-generic
gnome 2.20.1
hardware
memory 2.0 gb
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+

ubuntu-studio 8.04 amd64 dvd tells me that A distribution volume with software packages has been detected & Would you like to try to upgrade from it automatically?. I click on 'upgrade', it gets as far as the 'Distribution Upgrade' window and "preparing to upgrade", the just goes grey and hangs.
the same problem is repeated when i run update manager and i get the notice 'your system is up-to-date" & 'new distribution release '8.04 lts' is available. clicking upgrade opens release notes window with an upgrade button below. clicking upgrade again downloads upgrade tool (2 files) and on to distribution upgrade window as far as preparing upgrade/checking packages.
please help. i don't know how to proceed!
thank you.

Here's mine. Same as my other machine prior to upgrading to 8.04. Save a backup of your sources first, paste this in over the sources.list and save, then give it a go. I removed some other repos that you weren't showing to make it easier. You'll have your backup in case of disaster, but it looks like you just have a few repos commented out to me.

Shoot, just noticed you had Great Britain mirrors, I use US mirrors.
You may want to compare mine with yours and just remove the offending # symbols... Shoulda looked closer, my bad.

No, can't do- I get "Could not save the file /etc/apt/

did you open it the same way as before?
sudo gedit /etc/apt/
Then you are superuser and can save a backup as /etc/apt/
Then exit the file, reopen with the same sudo command as above and save with the changes as the original filename.
You noticed the differences in what you have with # and what I do, right?
If you edit that file, you really need to be sure about it. (Hence the backup)
=)

I found the file inside a thing called 'filesystem' and opened it with a text editor. I see now that if I open f with a terminal command I can edit it. Anyway, done as was suggested and put Douglas Smiths file there, but no change whatever. The updater still tells me that a new distribution release is available. I click on 'upgrade', it gets as far as the 'Distribution Upgrade' window and "preparing to upgrade", the just goes grey and stops.

Let's try a terminal based distribution upgrade and see what happens...
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -d
What effect does this have?

I get...

You're in London, right?
Do you see any major issues in his /etc/apt/
He's using gb repos...
