setting up a single os software raid in ubuntu 8.04

Asked by bandshark

Hello, I am trying to ditch M$*** for ever. The problem is that ubuntu 8.04 is not very user friendly at setting up either a fake raid 0, or a software raid 0. I have googled for 2 days, and can only find duel boot info. I do not want Windows on my system, but am beginning do give up and go back to the dark side. Can either a software raid 0 (mdadm), or a fakeraid 0 with the ich9r onboard be setup without a 3 hr setup process? I am not alone in thinking this is the new winmodem of the 2000's. But unfortunately it will only discourage people from making the switch and never looking back at linux again. Not a very good strategy of ubuntu to constantly refuse to support an easy fakeraid setup with each release. Just give people what they want even if they shouldn't have it! With competition like this, it is no wonder M$ can release a hobbled Os like vista. Sorry for the slight rant, but I am about to turn the pc off for good and go back to golf. Thanks.

Thanks for the question.

Use a software raid. It works better than the fake raid. A lot of motherboards need windows to be set up for fakeraids. If you use the alternate CD instead of the live CD, it can be easily done during the installation. Here are some instructions: http://advosys.ca/viewpoints/2007/04/setting-up-software-raid-in-ubuntu-server/

Hope this helps.

I don't know about fakeraid, but for software raid I've had no trouble using the alternate installation cd to get it to work. It's text based partitioner allows you to set up the raid physical volumes, then make the "raid drive" by combining them.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will try using the guide as posted. I am assuming i need to turn off the fake raid in bios and set to ide.
I will update the progress once I burn the alt install iso. Thanks again

The problem I was having was using the live cd and gparted. The alt cd method was exactly what I was looking for. Now I am completely free of the M$ chains lol. Thanks again Ralph & Troy.
