Lexmark x1240 Printer installation troubles

Asked by Tsenru

I've just purchased a Lexmark x1240 printer and I can't get it to install in Ubuntu 6.06.
On installation, it recognizes it as a 1200 series, but my printer model isn't on the list, and none of the others are close to the same model as mine.

Wow, I didn't even know that they made printers for under $30. Anywho, from what I have seen, Lexmark does not have very good Linux support. I have the x5150 and I am very sad that I had bought it, not only for Lexmark's non support of Linux, but it drinks $40 ink cartridges like you wouldn't believe. You may want to check out www.linuxprinting.org for help finding a printer from a mfg that does support Linux.

Hopefully if you just bought it, you can still return it.

It was a Christmas gift, and unfortunately I can't return it. It works fine with Windows (obviously), and the reason I don't want to get rid of it is because, for a $30 printer/scanner combo, it does some REALLY good scanning.
Thanks for the tip, though

I would recommend you contact Lexmark and voice your disappointment at their lack of support for your desktop of choice.

Well, they didn't help with my problem whatsoever, but they sent me this:
"...We appreciate your comments and customer feedback helps in
determining the interest level of our Lexmark customers with the various
operating systems. Although we do not have a solution for you at this time,
we will pass your comments on to our marketing department. They are
constantly evaluating our product line and input such as yours is extremely
valuable..."
So, in short, they'll think about maybe putting more Linux support into future printers.
I doubt my input had much impact on that, but in the long run, with more and more people switching to Linux, we can expect more support.
