FATAL ERROR IN HERON UPGRADE, NEED HELP

Asked by Ron

Hello. I just tried upgrading to Hardy Heron from Gutsy, and there was some fatal error during the installation of packages. I had to shut the computer off, and when it rebooted, it could not sucessfully load. I stupidly did not backup files before the upgrade!!!

I tried putting in the LiveCD for Heron, and mounted my harddrive. I thought I could then backup my files to a flashdrive and be saved. However, permission is denied to many of my folders and files! I tried using chmod ugo+r to be able to read and copy, but this doesn't work.

Please does anyone have ideas?!
Thanks so much!

You should be able to "sudo cp" everything to the flash drive instead of playing with permissions. The live cd won't ask for a password for that.

Can you help with this problem?
