ubuntu server 8 password for root

all the way of ubuntu server 8 installation , the system didnt prompt out for me to key in the root password,
It keep asking for root password when i want to change to root account.
is there any default password for root account once the installtion completed?

There is no root password. The root account is locked. To carry out administrative functions, preface your commands with "sudo" For example "sudo apt-get update" Sudo keeps nice logs of who does what and avoids the "i want you to forget the password" game when revoking root-priveleges from naughty users.
