compiz fusion does not work in hardy

Asked by Ian Brownlie

I installed Hardy Heron this morning with the help of the Ubuntu community, however I have a couple of problems.
  1. The rotating cube no longer works. Is it supposed to work in Hardy Heron ? if so how do I enable it ?
  2. What's happened to Firefox ? there are no iMacros and no extensions for it in Hardy. There is no Tab Max Plus extension either. Is it possible to revert to the old Firefox ?

1. First, check if your video card is compatible and you have the required drivers (if your card is nvidia or ATI, you may need the restricted drivers suggested by the Hardware driver Manager). If this is ok, to see the Cube, you may install the simple-ccsm package and/or the compizconfig-settings-manager. Both will allow you to configure various Compiz plugin options, including the Cube, number of Desktops, etc. The first one is a simplified version (easier to use) and the second is a more complete tool.

2. I don't know what iMacros are or which extension is avaliable for it. Firefox 3 had to be included (even in Beta state) because Hardy is going to be supported until 2011 / 2013, and Firefox support for current version should last until there (which I guess it won't happen to Firefox 2). You can try checking if your Extensions run by following this procedure: http://lifehacker.com/355973/make-your-extensions-work-with-the-firefox-3-beta . I also checked that there is a firefox-2 package on Hardy repositories; you may try it if Firefox 3 gives you too much trouble, currently.

Thanks Roberto, You were correct, it was the driver. All fixed now, as for Firefox I can live without the extensions. I'll just have to get used to being without them.
