Monitor Issue

Asked by kezzerdrix

IBM t60 ati integrated x1300 proprietary driver installed and in use

Desktop "visuals" turned off

ubuntu 8.04 installed, updated, 4\24\08

Using "screens and graphics" tool to set up my dual monitors which are hooked to my docking station, this works flawlessly in 7.10 but in 8.04 when I lock the screen only one screen goes black the other stays active and when I wiggle the mouse or tap a key the unlock dialog box never comes back and the black screen stays black requiring a forced reboot.

Screensaver does the exact same thing and when I try to turn off screen saver, I receive an empty dialog box that I have to force quit.

This was not an issue in 7.10 and now it is, I believe it has to do with the the new version of gnome conflicting with the ATI drivers. I have installed the system allowing Ubuntu to automatically install the prop drivers, I have also reinstalled the entire system and used ENVY to install the drivers. If I remove the ATI drivers the problem goes away but then again so does all of the performance. As I stated this is an issue with 8.04 it worked just fine in 7.10.

I have been trying to find a fix for this since back in the early beta days and have never received an answer.

HELP please

I would not think this an odd setup. I am the head of our local IT branch of an insurance corporation. My branch only has about 500 people. However some of the other branches scale up to over 5000. Out of my 500 employees about 200 of them have the same set up. IBM laptop connected to a dock with dual monitors. The monitors are Dell lcd's I believe fp1909's I have set up ubuntu with both generic, and specific monitors defined. Nothing helps. I could always revert back to 7.10 but I am really wanting to use the LTS version especially, if I am going to try and offer to employees.

Thanks for your question kezzerdrix.

I'd like to encourage you to file a bug report for that behavior. Just click https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/30657/+makebug and you're able to link this question to your new bug. I'd recommend selection "fglrc" as package (That's ATI's proprietary drivers).

I'd like to point out, that there's very few things Ubuntu can do about ATI's closed-source drivers. Because of that, the open source drivers are recommended for a stable "experience".

You might also think about buying into canonicals commercial support option: http://canonical.com/services/support

This way, you don't need to wait two days until you get an answer and you've got a direct line to the full-time Ubuntu developers. I'm quite sure you will experience more than one problem dealing with Ubuntu support on 500 PCs, so it's worth the money.

Currently, I am the only one using .... trying to use Ubuntu\Kubuntu. I was trying to see if it would be a viable option.

You still need to file a bug report, since it's obviously a bug with ATI's flgrx driver.

I did file a bug report, exactly how you stated, I don't see how it can be an ATI issue though using ATI 8.3 driver in Ubuntu\Kubuntu 7.10 it worked flawlessly. Using the same driver in 8.04 is broken, seems to me something is broken somewhere else, however, I can barely code "hello world" let alone an OS. Which brings me to another question, how come dual monitors are so difficult in Linux? It seems that it could probe the monitors at boot and do an "if" switch but then again, I must humble myself as I don't really know what I am talking about. I like what Linux stands for as I am no lover of the microsoft, but it is a lot of fracking work.
