dual boot XP Pro with another HDD

Asked by Paulo M.

Hello everyone!
Please, can anyone help me with this?
I've tried already and for very times live sessions with older versions of ubuntu, and I've been waiting for 8.04 to come to install it in my PC.
But I have some doubts:
- I've got 3 SATA HDD - a 320 GB Westren Digital where is installed M$ windows XP (C), a 500 GB Samsung for warehouse for documents (photos, videos and a lot of other stuff we usually keep in our PCs (D), and I've also a 160GB Maxtor that's completely clean (E)... can I install Ubuntu 8.04 in this last HDD 160GB using all of his space for this OS (E), and get dual boot anyway?
- And after that, can I get access to all those files I keep in the 500 GB HDD (D)?
- I've a core2duo processor (E6750) but my Windows XP Pro is a 32 bits version - can I install Ubuntu 64 bits without any conflict?
- In this case, I'd rather choose complete installation after booting from CD, right?

Thanks in advance... and all my best!

Yes, you may install Ubuntu on the third HDD and still have dual boot. You will be able to access the files on the 500 Samsung HDD, because it will be available as a unit in the menu Places, as long as it uses a compatible file system FAT 32, which is used by Windows, is compatible, so I guess you will have no problem.

As far as I recall, your processor is 64-bit, so you may use this version. There will be no conflict with windows XP.

Thank you so much for you help, but I forgot one thing... all my HDD use NTFS file system... ubuntu don't recognize yet this file system? I was hoping .... as long as that HDD use NTFS, ubuntu will not recognize it? And by the way, the third HDD uses (until now) NTFS file system too! When I get Ubuntu installed it will be formated in FAT 32?
...and yes, this processor is 64-bit!
Appreciate further help...

Thanks again

Oi Paulo,

How did you resolve the NTFS/FAT 32 issue?

I have Windows XP Pro SP2 installed in my first HDD with two others to spare.
I want to dual-boot with Ubuntu 8.04.
I don't want Linux inside Windows (wubi) but I want to be able to remove Ubuntu without compromising Windows, if I decide to.

Will the Ubuntu installation take care of all the details for me?

Let me know if you have already done this and what was the outcome.

Thanks,

Hello buddie...!
Simply installed Ubuntu 8.04 from CD... at reboot, of course..........
I've chosen that HDD I had free (160 GB) when prompt for the local to perform installation, and that was all........
Now my configuration is: HDD 320 GB with XP Pro and other windows apps, HDD 500 documents "warehouse", and finally HDD 160 GB with ubuntu 8.04.
Now, wverytime I start my pc, I'm prompted in dual boot witch OS I choose to run......... so simple!
Better: When running ubuntu 8.04 I have full access to both other HDD (NTFS file system) - even the one with XP Pro!

Go forward with this.... it worth it!

All my best!
