can I upgrade from gutsy to hardy from the disc

 Can I upgrade from gutsy to hardy using the installation disc. I have a copy of the hardy heron disc but I can't risk losing all my data if it just does a clean install. I tried using the upgrade manager but it always crashes out half way through (busy server I think). Could someone please advise me?.

You can upgrade by CD, but not from the LiveCD I don't think. Have a look here:
