I have downloaded the 7.04 version of ubuntu and I saved it to my desktop; I dont know what application to open it with or where to go from where I am now

Asked by Ezovercomings

I downloaded the 7.04 version of ubuntu from download.com and when the download was complete it was saved as a file on my Windows XP desktop. However, it is a file with a little white box with little shapes inside, which tells me that I need to find the right application to open the ubuntu file with. Right now I dont know what to open it with, the ubuntu file is just sitting on my desktop now.

ok, i guess you downloaded the cd-image with the name ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso or similar... if not, even if you did you can download the just released, brand new Ubuntu 8.04 from www.ubuntu.com (will be much easier to install)

There you get an iso-file too. Download it, start your favorite cd-burning-application (for example cloneCD, Nero, ...) and select "burn image file". Then you enter a blank cd in your disk-drive and let the drive do its job. If its burnt you reinsert the cd and start the installer-file on it (if autostart didn't make it already) and you can follow the few easy steps of the installer.

If you haven't any cd-burning-drive or don't have any blank cds around just repost, I'm sure there also are other ways of installing it.

Does the "file" is a window with many icons? In my first installation of Ubuntu, after burning the CD, I got something similar. Click on the drawing named Wubi at the bottom (which is yellow if I recall correctly) and follow instructions. That is what worked for me.
