The Linux web site says that x86 will work with any CPU, whereas the 64 bit will only work on a 64 bit system.

Go with x86. Your computer is NOT 64 bit so only the regular x86/32 bit will work.

Good luck.

Well, hang on, because his computer might be 64 bit. "Centrino" comprises five or six platforms from Intel, some of which were/are Core 2. For example, my HP nx7400 is branded Centrino, but is Core 2 Duo as well:

kitten@minerva~$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 15
model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5600 @ 1.83GHz

And all Core 2 chips are 64 bit.

So, are we *sure* his Centrino doesn't have a 64-bit processor? If you've already got some form of Linux on that machine, run the same command I ran above. If it's running Windows, I believe the Device Manager can tell you.

That having been said, you can install the 32 bit version on a 64 bit machine, and it'll work just fine, so don't stress too much about it.

I have noticed some performance gains in benchmarking two of these machines side by side, one with 32-bit 7.04 and the other with 64-bit 7.04. But the 32-bit install will still run very, very well.

ur an idiot scott! I just bought an asus laptop with a intel centrino duo processor, it is infact 64BIT NOT 32bit. go back to school dude!
that set of processors can infact run 64bit ubuntu. whether or not it can run 32bit... well i doubt it! especially since the processor doesnt
emulate 32 bit software. the reason many 32bit programs run on win vista x64 operating systems is because of the emulation layer that is part of the operating, NOT dependent on the processor at all! woithout the emulation layer in x64 vista you wouldnt be able to run any 32bit windows programs. therefore you need some type of emulation software to run inside ubuntu. I dont doubt that it either already exists or is in the making as i write this.
