Software website

Asked by Fred

There is 25000+ packages in the repository. It is a jungle. I have no idea what all stuff are, and whats good, and whats not so good.

I would like to see an software website. Kinda like download.com or something.

It can have stuff like "Most popular software", "Latest updated software", "Top 25", "Top 50", "Top 100". "Most popular this week/month/year". "Top-rated", "User favorites".

And it can be stars, like 1-5 star to see which one is good.
Maybe users can vote, and write description what they think and others can read it.

The website can have screenshots too. So that you can see what the software looks like and how it is, without actually installing it.

Also you can have "Pick of the month", and such.
And you can browse by category such as business, games, graphics, multimedia, networking, security, science, etc.

And you can search the site, and install software with just 1 click using apt-url, etc.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
However this suggestion for the creation of a website to better track packages (i.e. Software Directory) is beyond the scope of the development teams within the Ubuntu community.

That being said, perhaps other members of the Ubuntu community has the same suggestion as you do and are working among themselves to setup such a service. You could check within the Ubuntu Forums (www.ubuntuforms.org) if such projects are being worked on, and if not, perhaps create a new post to inform the community of the want for such a service.

In the meantime, perhaps you may want to refer to the Debian-Packages directory (http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages) to see if it meets your needs.

Thank you and Feel free to continue to report any other bugs you may find.

I have posted the idea on Brainstorm here;

And on Ubuntuforums here;

Debian-Packages directory is not what I was looking for...
