Where is the system log?

My computer is randomly freezing up on me. First the gnome-panel refuses to work and I cannot open the terminal at all. Soon the desktop becomes unresponsive as well. I am forced to do a forced shutdown to restart the computer.

Where is the system log so I can perhaps figure out what is crashing?

Thanks for your question.

Most of the logs in ubuntu are in the folder /var/log. You probably want to look in the files syslog and messages.
