terminal window blank

Asked by thedoorguy

I am running 7.10, dual boot with w98se.

When I click Applications > Accessories >Terminal a window opens with a totally white background and nothing else appear. Right click on the window > Edit Current Profile lists (initial title) as terminal. Also checked and the background/ text colors are not the same.

Tried to un-install to reinstall Terminal but it won't let me.

Help please. What is linux without a terminal...lol

Thanks.... thedoorguy aka Richard

Wierd.

Have you checked out Terminator? Makes Gnome Termnal look silly IMHO...
Have a look:
https://edge.launchpad.net/terminator/

You may have to switch to TTY1 (Control-Alt F1) to run the install commands, given your current issues.
Install directions for Gutsy are here:
http://www.tenshu.net/terminator/

Have fun!

Crud... I forgot...
Terminator uses gnome terminal preferences (for now)...
If it does the same thing as your gnome terminal, you KNOW you have some profile problems that need fixed.

First check if it's related to your account. Create a new account, open a session, and check if the terminal is OK.
If it's not, then it's not related to your account.

Let's imagine it is.
Then if you don't have particular settings of the terminal that you would like to keep, you could try to delete everything in /home/yourlogin/.gconf/apps/gnome-terminal and see it if solves your problem.

Good call, francois.
Still, give terminator a shot, very cool stuff.

Francois..... I set up new account and the terminal opens a blank white window there to.

Douglas.... I installed Terminator. It opens to shell on a white background with only a scroll bar on the right side. Is that normal? No title bar as shown at tenshu. (Hey I had those windows type max/min/close boxes they show but mine went away. How can I get those windows features back?)

Well... Terminator give me access... don' t know what to do with it (lol)... but at least when I'm instructed to enter something on the terminal I can.

Any Idea how to un-install Terminal? I guess it doesn't hurt anything just being there but it bugs me.

PS ... someone on the forum advised to hit Alt-f2 and enter xterm .... that open a terminal window that opens to shell with a black background and white type.

Thanks Much for your help!!!! I really appreciate the fix to my OS and the help with my education.

If you installed Terminator using Synaptic (or the Add/Remove applications tool), you can simply use Synaptic to remove it. That's the way most softwares should be installed on your ubuntu, it's not really the same philosophy as Windows: you don't go on a website and download your software. You use synaptic or the other tool and softwares are downloaded from trusted sources.

If it's not related to your profile, I would try to uninstall the terminal and reinstall it. Look for "gnome-terminal" in synaptic, right click, select the second deletion option (sorry my ubuntu is in french, I don't know the english translation, but it should be "complete removal" or something like that). It will tell you that "ubuntu-desktop" will be deleted too, but that's not a problem.

Apply, it will uninstall those two softwares. Then in Synaptic, look for "ubuntu-desktop" and select it for installation. It should install "gnome-terminal" too, as "ubuntu-desktop" is simply the list of the main softwares to install in Ubuntu. Apply, it will reinstall the terminal. It should not take more than a couple of minutes to do that.

Then try again the terminal. If it's not any better, tell us, and we will have to use our brain a bit more ;)

I un-installed terminal and destktop as you outlined using Synaptic then reinstalled ubuntu-desktop. Unfortunity... the problem persists... Terminal is still just a blank white window.

Hummmm... I'm surprised... I expected that to work. Strange I am not experiencing something similar on other applications. I haven't oppened all of them... maybe I should just to check.

Thanks Francois!

My problem was solved with help from a couple of gentlemen on the forum.

Turns out there is a prior bug fix....#127887.

The cause of the problem is a nvidia video card.

This fix also restored the title bar and min/max/close action block to my windows.

Thanks to both of you guys for your input. I truely appreciated your help!!
