intel wireless driver for linux

Asked by soloman

I have Ubuntu 8.04 installed on my acer travel mate 2303LCi Laptop I am suitably impressed the following hardware works fine CD/DVD combo drive, Keyboard, screen, sound system, microsoft wireless mouse. Not working is the printer which is apparantly a paperweight with Linux, most important of all is the wireless adapter
This being an intel pro 2022 working with iEEE802.11b/g standard. I have downloaded a driver package for Linux from intel which includes firmware version 3.0 and the driver file. the install instructions talk about updating the kernel deleting references to old intel drivers and to the iEE802 subsystem. As I am new to Linux could some one provide me with step by step instructions on how to get this all installed into the system I am confused, as I see references to intel wireless in the file system under modules. is this driver already there or not? please help with this problem by providing installing wireless for dummies type instructions. thank you in advance.

I'm quite surprised that an intel wireless card is not recognized by Ubuntu, especially if you are using the latest release.

A few questions:
-how do you know wireless is not working? Where did you check?
-Are you up to date? 8.04 is finalized tomorrow only, so if you are running an outdated version, maybe it's simply a bug. Usually Intel wireless card are supported.

To compile and install your own kernel module is quite complicated, so I prefer to ask those questions to make sure you really cannot avoid it.

duncan@duncan-laptop:~$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

this is the response I have francois,
plus there is a switch on the front of the laptop to turn wireless on and off this normally activates a light wich flashes as the system is trying to connect, none of this happens.
I have installed all the updates that are available through update manager do you think I should dowload and re-install 8.04 tomorrow?
