Won't boot after upgrade

Asked by Tommy Skiles on 2007-01-04

Hi, I've been using Ubuntu for a few months now, so I am new to all this. I purchased the Official Ubuntu book with the Dapper Dvd in it and I put it on both the Dell's I have here, and enjoy the way they work. When Edgy came out with the latest Firefox and all, I decided to upgrade. I tried to upgrade through the update manager (like it is suggested) the download seemed ok, after it started to install, it terminated and when I tried to boot I got this.

BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-2ubuntu3) Built-in shell (ash)

Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

/bin/sh: can't access tty;job control turned off
(initramfs)_

I updated the other one of my computers this way and it went fine. The machine that this is on is a dual boot with windows on the older hard drive. I loaded 6.10 on another partition of this hard drive after I couldn't boot it after the error.
Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.15-27-386 (on /dev/hdb1), this is the bad partition.
If this is not fixable, then my question would be, is there a way to get at the data in the partition that this( or what's left of this ) system is on. I would appreciate any help. I have the original 6.06 on CD.

I also recieved the error:

BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-2ubuntu3) Built-in shell (ash)

Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

/bin/sh: can't access tty;job control turned off
(initramfs)_

For some reason it was being caused by having my iPod nano plugged in. Try unplugging all unnecessary USB devices and see if the system starts normally.

As Adam says, I suspect this is down to the way in which your USB mass
storage devices are being presented in such a way that the boot loader
is getting mislead as to which device to boot from.

I unplugged my card reader and scanner. The result on boot up was the same.

I used a live Cd, pulled the info out of the partition that I wanted, then reinstalled the distro. Thanks for the help.
