Ubuntu 8.04 RC1 Audio problems

Asked by olik on 2008-04-23

I have a strange problem.
When I boot ubuntu and i start Rhithmbox the audo works, but if I then
start firefox and a youtube video, the youtube video will play without

When I then log out of ubuntu and back in, and then start a youtube
video, the audio works, but if I then try Rhithmbox, Rhithmbox will
not be able to play any audio.

I thought the problem might have to do with firefox so I installed the
Epiphany Browser, and guess what, the sound didn t worked at all on
Rhithmbox, even after a reboot without starting Epiphany, so I deleted
Epiphany and I am back to the first problem.

Has anyone the same problem?
My workaround is, logout and back in ubuntu to use firefox or
rhithmbox with audio.

Hope this problem will not be in the finished ubtunu 8.04

I have the same problem. I figured out a temporary solution for me. I went to the system monitor and selected pulseaudio and clicked on end process. Now I can watch youtube and play rhythmbox with no problem. Hopefully this works for you.

You are right, that works for me. What is pulseaudio?
Thanks for the advice :)

No problem. I got this description from Ubuntu:
The release candidate comes preinstalled with the PulseAudio sound server, which makes it possible to mix audio from multiple applications together, assign audio from individual applications to specific sound cards, adjust volume levels of each individual application, and perform advanced operations on audio streams such as transferring the audio to another computer or changing sample formats and channel counts.

Can you help with this problem?
