Kontact and Korganizer crash on use v16.04 LTS

I used KDE Kontact and Korganizer as my PIM under Ubuntu 12.04 LTS for years. I upgraded to 16.04 (Xenial) and re-installed Kontact (includes Korganizer). I can launch the applications. When I try to configure them to use a non-default data file, they crash. This is repeatable and still exists (Jul 2016). What have I missed on done incorrectly?

How did you upgrade?
What steps did you take?
Was it a clean install of Xenial or did you upgrade to Trusty and then to Xenial?
