No Sound From Hardy

Asked by Yelloman3

I've read all the post on issues with sound. I can't find any that sound similar to my issue. One thing I share with most posters though is that I lost sound after updating some packages a couple of days ago. I'm not receiving any error messages or anything like that. I just get no system sounds, any sounds from any multimedia programs. Just dead silence. The weird thing is that the only noise my system has mad in the last couple of days is a surprising celebration horn from Nero's successful burn of Hardy alternate cd.

I'm not sure what system info you might need.
I'm on a Dell inspiron e1505
i'm running Hardy 2.6.24-16-generic
Im using the generic driver for sound (alsa)

Please let me know any other info you might need to assess my issue. Along with instructions on how to obtain said info (i'm a total ubuntu virgin).

Thanks

Isn't Hardy using PulsAudio for sound in lieu of ALSA?
In a terminal, try:

sudo aptitude install pulseaudio

See if that helps, first.

I tried the sudo ......pulseaudio. Everything is still the same. I assumed it was using alsa cause that what was in the "Default mixer tracks" drop down menu in the sound preference. They are as follows;
HDA intel (alsa mixer)
sigmatel stac9200 (oss mixer)
Playback: alsa pcm on front:0 (stac92xx analog...
capture: monitor source of alsa pcm on front....
capture: alsa pcm on front: 0 (stac92xx analog...

I've tried each one. Nothing.... I have "Sound events, music and movies, audio conferencing on "auto detect"

The only thing on my stem that interfaces w/ pulseaudio is the volume control center.

Yelloman3,

I also have the Intel HDA controller and have had this problem on occassion. Although presently Surround is muted on my system, when I lose sound, unmuting it and raising the volume brings it back.

The default mixer track you describe above is how mine set.

Try opening Volume Control, going to Edit > Preferences, uncheck Surround then raise the Surround volume to 100% and unmute it. See if that returns your sound

Please report back here and let me know if this resolves your problem, or if you require further information.

Thanks,

Harvey

I went in to the preferences, but didn't see any options for Surround. Messing with the volume controls in there did pop the volume back on though. First it was coming trough the left side only. Muting it then turning it back up fixed that. I now have sound from both speakers.

Thanks a bunch Harvey.

I had the same problem, and when I went into the Volumn Control I noticed the Mute was on, but that didn't show in my music program. Funny that. All working now. Panic over. Now for a long hard Brandy!
