Can Ubuntu/Kubuntu be installed from the Live CD with DSL?

Asked by Richard Bligdon

I booted Kubuntu Live CD

*Biostar NF61S M2 TE motherboard AMD2 64x2 4 Ghz(I think)
Nvidia GE6100
 HD audio
Ethernet

*What like about Kubuntu 7.04(?)...

All hardware detected perfectly ...especially the sound(I have Suse 10.3 on the PC at present, but the audio is so low I can barely hear it.Yes,it's turned up).

However, when I try to install, because I have a DSL connection, when the install gets to "scanning mirrors...82%" it just stops there and does nothing(in fact,I gave up,rebooted, found out it had resized the windows partition[it's ok,just a win 2k03 server demo...no sensitive data!)....but never did any install.

After reading the DSL instructions on the website here,I open a terminal window and it worked perfectly!

So.....

If I booted into the Live CD,opened a terminal window, did the sudo pppoe-dsl provider bit and then clicked "install" would the conenction stay open?

Richard

How long did you wait for the disk to scan the mirrors? This step can sometimes take a while depending on your connection.

In any case, if it got to 82%, that indicates that the connection is working and that your DSL connection is therefore not the problem.

Not sure how long I waited, but one reason I thought the DSL connection wasn't working was because when I first booted into the live cd,I brought up Konqueror and tried to connect to the Ubuntu website and it failed.

Richard,

There's a simple test you can run to find out if networking is running properly. When you load the live CD, open up Konsole (the terminal emulator), and type:
ping -c 5 google.com

The results will tell you whether or not you are connected.

Hello..

Tensed and confused? Relax mate... Here is a simple workaround..

Pull the plug on the net connection just before it scans the updates around the 80% mark , once its installed plug your net back in and setup your sources list and away you go.

cheers

Bhavani Shankar.
