i tried to install 8.04 beta 32 bit from with in windows it got as far as downloading updates and rebooting then failing saying failed to initialised hal removed from system and tried the same with 8.04 release 1 it too failed on faled to initialised hal i can install if i use install from live cd does wubi really work.

i have been using ubuntu since 6.10 but cannot get 8.04 to install using wubi from with in windows to put it simply i install it and try for updates it applys updates then when it reboots it comes up with the same error message faile to initialised hal, all buttons try to work once but then nothing responds and i have to reset from front of pc each time i try again the same thing happens i know that if i install from within live cd it works because i have tried but because of daughters school work i cannot comit fully to hard drive

i strongly believe that the problem is with the updated kernel as it works with the old one

Sounds like a kernel or kernel driver problem to me, too. I'd suggest you checking the system logs, like I did when I had this bug [ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24/+bug/212271 ]. You problem looks similar, but I think it is not the same, since this one it's fixed to me.
